Third grade recently kicked off their biography unit in both reading and writing. They are exploring the genre through interactive read-alouds, guided reading texts, partner activities such as "Biography Detectives," and during Writer's Workshop. We began biographies by immersing ourselves in the genre and reading, reading, reading lots of biographies. Then we learned about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by comparing and contrasting various biographies about his life. To celebrate Black History Month coming up, we read many biographies together about famous African Americans including Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, and Michael Jordan. Students then were set free to explore the genre both independently and with buddies to find biographies that peeked their interest. As they travel through their biography journey they will also be discovering the lives of famous Massachusetts people of the American Revolution. They are excited and looking forward to the culminating activity which will include an Author's Tea sharing their reading and writing about biographies in the form of brochures that will be completed during their computer class.
